johnnybubonic asked: I ACCIDENTALLY THE RUBBERBANDS. IS THIS BAD? no, but really- when i dread i typically don't even use bands at all, i just grab loose hair and eyeball it. this is definitely not for those that want "neat" and "tidy" locks that look groomed, though- it tends to create a more organic, natural look/sectioning while it forms. have you ever tried it on any of your clients? only 3 of my 17 have wanted the "natural" look, but they tend to be the ones most happy with them.

ZOMGZ NO UR GONNA DIE BUT FIRST UR FACE WILL XSPLOD.

But seriously. For the sake of other followers:

Rubber bands are totally an optional thing for sectioning. My own dreads were made entirely by grabbing random sections of hair, going “chyeah that looks about right” & setting to work on it (of course, that’s mostly because the decision to dread my whole head was made on a whim in the middle of the night after doing what would’ve been five random ones).

When I dread, I do normally section first because it makes my job easier. I don’t end up with so many random surprise wonky areas (especially around the ears) that don’t quite fit correctly this way.

Most people have wanted a more uniform size, but one was interested in a mix that would be more similar to mine. I still sectioned him off with bands, but the sizes are varied & placed according to the way his hair naturally lays over his scalp (& scars). They’re quite lovely & certainly natural looking, regardless of using bands to section initially.

Regardless of whether you section off your hair with rubberbands (then select a section, remove the band, backcomb it, & repeat with the next section), or just eye ball your sections as you go, either way will get you beautiful dreads.

As for “neat” & “tidy” dreads…that entire concept still makes me laugh. I cannot tell people enough…if you can’t handle having messy hair, dreads may not be the style for you.

Lastly, no matter what way you end up going, rubber bands shouldn’t touch your dreads. Not at the roots, not at the tips, nor anywhere in between. Sectioning only, or not at all ♥
