rim-jobs-on-saturn-deactivated2 asked: I love my dreads but people make me feel bad about them because my dreads look like nothing everyone expects. I prefer to do pure neglect, is that bad, I mean, I refuse to use chemicals of help along the process in any artificial manner, is that wrong?

HELL NO, it isn’t wrong!

What most people don’t understand is that dreadlocks aren’t instant. You don’t “get” them, you start them. They are a process, a journey. It will take AT LEAST several months to a year before your dreads look the way people expect them to. You see photos of dreads all over the place- what they don’t say is that those dreads are often mature sets that are already years old.

Full neglect can often take even longer. Well over a year for some people. That doesn’t make it the “wrong” way to start your dreads. It’s actually pretty much the best way, in all honestly. It just takes time.

& chemicals should never be involved with dreadlocks, no matter what starting method you choose.

Don’t let other people put you down because they are ignorant. Love your hair & all the silly crazy things it’s doing right now, & trust that with time you are going to have a bangin’ set of locks ♥!!
