horribleorifice asked: I didn't section them off or anything I just started them, I want them as natural as possible in their different sizes and shapes. But there are a few that are just too small, is their a way to combine a few dreads?

You can always just let them grow together. They’ll usually end up trying to at some point- just don’t separate them. Some people also put a loose bead or string around both dreads (further down- never at the root) or even braiding them to encourage them to grow together in the future. You may end up with a forked end this way if the dreads are already pretty established. There’s nothing wrong with that unless it bothers you.

If you want to join them yourself it’s a bit trickier (this is where having an experienced dreadhead around can make life easier) but it can be done. There’s several methods, but this is the one I like best. If done well, you can’t even tell you had two separate dreads!

First, find the tiny dread & chose a dread next to it to combine it with. Check the root section & judge which one it will fit nicely with best.

Now take a long, thin, blunt tool close to the size of your little dread (like the BACK of a crochet hook, or a phillips head screwdriver) & push it up through the center of the thicker dread. Think of it like boring a hole for the little dread to go in.

Now take a carpet needle (those are the huge blunt ones with giant eyes) & thread the loose end of the little dread through the eye. Use the needle to pull the little dread up through the big one in the path you just created.

If you do this cleanly, straight up the center from the root, they should be joined seamlessly & will grow together from this point onwards.
