Anonymous asked: Do you have any tips for getting started with african-american hair? Like what's a good length to start and does backcombing still work for my kinda hair? Also, pictures?

Backcombing can absolutely work well on Afro-textured hair, so long as yours isn’t very brittle. It really varies between individuals whether this is the best choice. If your hair is strong & healthy, go for it!

Other starting methods are very different from methods used to start dreads in Caucasoid hair. The good news for you is that TONS of salons are familiar with these methods, so finding someone to start them for you is a piece of cake! Dreads can also be started much shorter on your hair type, depending on the method used.

I haven’t worked on Afro-textured hair yet, so I’m not terribly familiar with the methods first-hand. However, I’ve seen this website & it’s tutorials highly recommended a few times, so I would give them a peek! Also, if you aren’t already familiar with her, I would definitely recommend checking out Miss Franchesca Ramsey. She’s brilliant, hilarious, has AMAZING locks, & even has a YouTube channel devoted entirely to hair.

If anyone else can recommend some good resources, please chime in!
