Anonymous asked: I have been slowly working on starting my dreads from the nape of my neck up. I have been using both the backcombing method, and a crochet technique. Before I do then rest of my head, which method would you recommend?
Crochet hooks shouldn’t be involved in starting your dreads.
That entire process breaks a lot of hair, & the even bigger problem is that what it creates isn’t so much a dread or a knot, as it is a weird braided sort of structure. Your hair has a very hard time rubbing together to form real knots this way, & often takes longer to start knotting on it’s own as it grows out. Crochet also creates a really odd texture that looks like synthetic falls, & doesn’t blend with new growth.
Go hide the crochet hook from yourself for the next 6-12 months & finish your backcombing. They are for minimal maintenance only (& used in an entirely different way) after your dreads mature (but honestly, you’re better off never using one at all- it certainly isn’t needed). ♥
