carnival-of-light asked: in the separating video you say not to use scissors to cut the hair, why is that?

Oh yeah, I guess I got sidetracked. It doesn’t seem to make logical sense, but after tons of experiments to ascertain the best way to separate dreads, I (& the friends who guinea pigged for me) discovered that for some reason cutting the dreads apart tends to cause serious weak spots. & weak spots right at your root are not a good idea. Not that weak spots anywhere are a good idea, but you catch my drift.

The hair also seems less inclined to merge back into the correct dread when it’s cut bluntly. It just kinda chills there, waving around like the little obnoxious nugget that it is, rubbing it’s impunity in your face. Whereas strands that are gently broken one by one with your fingers just go quietly & politely back where they belong.

& yeah, once you get dreads, your hair becomes a separate entity from you with a mind & personality all it’s own. So you may think I’m bonkers now talking about them that way, but just wait & see when your dreads throw their first mutiny. Sheesh. There is no controlling them- they do what they want & you’re just along for the ride.
